
If you drive out of Thermisia towards Ermione you will see a striking rock in the north direction. Not surprisingly, a castle was built on it. It is an excellent vantage point to check out Hydra bay and strait. On top of this Lizard rock, 350 metres high, you find the medieval Frankish Castle of Thermisia. It's a Crusader stronghold, built in the late 12th Century. The Franks defended and ruled over the surrounding countryside and Greek shores and seas. The valuable saltpans in the lagoon below was of great interest to them. The castle is first mentioned in written sources in 1347 as being called Tremis. The castle is worth exploring and access is a relatevly moderate and safe 30 minute climb.
