Lighthouse of Sapienza

Description

The lighthouse of Sapienza was built by the English in 1885. The height of its stone tower is 8 meters. It was constructed at the request of Queen Victoria of England. The first lit of the beacon took place on September 1, 1885. Today it is powered by photovoltaic systems. You can walk to it from Porto Longo.

The illumination of the lighthouse (1885) made a great impression on the inhabitants of the villages, which are perched on the hills cast of Methoni, from where the lighthouse is visible. Until 1989, the mirrors of the lighthouse were illuminated using asbestos lamps and its light could be seen from a long distance, reaching up to 40 miles.
