The Abandoned "Sodom and Gomorrah" of Greece

Hotel Salanti is called the abandoned "Sodom and Gomorrah" of Greece.

In 1980, this was the first hotel for nudists in Greece. Beautifully remote, it aimed to attract tourism from all over Europe with a unique offering: nudism.

It quickly became a success on several fronts. Although quite remote, savvy bus operators quickly saw a new opportunity: voyeurism tourism. Buses were laid in from Athens to this bay to take a look at all that beautiful and less beautiful nudity.

But all this success was not reckoned with the conservative forces of the Greek Orthodox Church and other conservative movements in the region.

They soon spoke of the Biblical "Sodom and Gomorrah" that had settled on Greek soil. And that metaphor did enough to put a stop to the nudist party.

The hotel had to drop the option of nudism, but that meant the end of the success and the business went under a few years later. The building now looms as a ghost building in the bay and valley. It is a pity that nothing beautiful happens with it because the bay and its surroundings have a lot to offer.

And the inhabitants of nearby Fourni also found the more than 100 jobs offered there quite interesting. Maybe one day it will be breathed new life into it, with or without "a naked but on the beach".
