The Megalopolis basin is a tectonic half-graben (faults are in the east of the basin) filled with Neogene to Holocene continental sediments. This basin was once a lake and marshy area. It was the grave of a straight-tusked elephant (or Palaeoloxodon antiquus). That is an extinct species of elephant that inhabited Europe and Western Asia during the Middle and Late Pleistocene (781,000–30,000 years Before Present).
