The rift south of the Amorgos Fault is also linked to the massive earthquake of July 9, 1956, known as the Amorgos Earthquake. It was the worst earthquake in Greece's recent history. The epicenter of the earthquake was located a few kilometers south of this fault line in the graben area. The shifting of boulders in the sea also caused a tsunami that reached a height of 30m. The island of Santorini in particular was hit hard.
