Schist is a very popular building material here on Sifnos. Besides being common in the southeastern part of Sifnos, it is flat, easy to stack, and very durable, although not as hard as limestone.
You recognize schist rock because it produces flattened stones and usually a greenish color, hence the name 'greenschist'.
The word "schist" comes from the Greek and literally means "cleft".
It derives from the Greek verb σχίζω (schízō), meaning "to split" or "to break." You'll undoubtedly recognize the word from your history class: the Western Schism, which also means division, but not in a lithological sense.
Schist is a type of rock that is typically fissile deep in thin layers due to the flat, scaly minerals it contains. This property of easy fission gives the rock its name. It is therefore excellent as a building stone.
