The Koufonisia archipelago (Ano/Pano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, Keros, and various small islands/rocks such as Pangia and Choinousa/Choinoisa) lies between Naxos and Amorgos and belongs to the “ Small Cyclades ”. The islands consist mainly of metamorphic and volcanic rocks of the Cycladic mass, later uplifted, fractured, and carved out by marine erosion into relatively low, undulating plateaus with steep coastal segments. The coastal morphology is characterized by gentle, mostly gently sloping plateaus inland, with an alternation of cliff sections, coves, beaches, and numerous sea caves towards the coast. The many caves and “hollow” coastal segments gave the islands their name: “koufios” (hollow), which refers to the rocks hollowed out by the sea.
