Gravel adventure in Crete

This is a challenging gravel route of nearly 97 kilometers through the rugged interior of Crete, where you immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the island. The route takes you along deserted paths and through barren landscapes, with a total ascent of nearly 3000 meters. You mostly ride through quiet, rural areas where you encounter little traffic.

Halfway, you pass Gournia, a remarkable Minoan palace complex that was excavated in the early 20th century by archaeologist Harriet Boyd-Hawes. It is hidden in a wooded area and offers a unique glimpse into the ancient civilization of Crete.

Near Agios Nikolaos, you arrive at Lake Voulismeni, a former freshwater lake that is now a bay. With a depth of 64 meters and a diameter of 137 meters, it looks like a mysterious hole in the ground. According to local tradition, the goddess Athena is said to have bathed here.

The route is tough and requires perseverance, but rewards you with an unforgettable experience through the heart of Crete.
