Ano Koufonissi is one of the islands of the Koufonissi archipelago. The name Koufonissi is linked to the many sea caves that pirates eagerly used in the past.

The island is compact: via reasonably accessible paths you can walk just over 11 kilometers almost completely around it. However, do not be misled by the short distance, as the heat can be intense. Bringing enough water is absolutely necessary. Along the way, you are rewarded with numerous idyllic bays and inviting swimming spots with crystal clear water, especially along the east coast. That is why we let the loop run clockwise so you can cool off in the water when you are well warmed up.

Shade is scarce, as trees are almost completely absent here. The open, sun-soaked and bone-dry landscapes give the island its unique and rugged charm. Be sure to also direct your gaze to the south at the nearby, uninhabited high island Kéros. This island carries a rich Cycladic history and captivates the imagination, partly due to its connection with the story of “The Guns of Navarone.”

Along your route, you should not miss some special places, such as the striking karst phenomenon of Gala Beach and the mysterious “Devil's Eye.” Also take some time to scrape some sea salt from the rocks, just like the locals have done for centuries.
