Access: There are multiple options for climbing Inishowen’s Slieve Sneaghta, the route highlighted is probably the most common and one you will find most promoted. Taking the first turn-off on your right while driving on the R244 from Buncrana to Carndonagh, you will come across a closed gate on the narrow country road. By continuing along this road (be sure to close gate behind you) you will come to the beginning of the Slieve Sneaghta route highlighted above where you will also find a small parking area (OSI Map 3, grid ref: C395 401).

Difficulty level: Moderate to Difficult - Good level of fitness required, no defined path, wet boggy land to be expected with steep ground in some areas. Appropriate footwear and hiking equipment should be worn. Bring sufficient food / water and have a map and navigational aids at hand.

Total distance: 6.59km

Estimated time to climb & return to car park: Allow for 3– 4hrs, dependent on fitness levels and weather.

Total climb ascent: 447m

Notable features: During the winter months and following heavy rain, ground underfoot can be wet at lower levels. There is no defined pathway, but there are route markers at specific points. The summit offers spectacular views of the Inishowen area right up to Irelands most northerly point, Malin Head. You will also have views of both Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly including the nearby Urris hills.

The area around Slieve Sneaghta is perfect for navigational training with plenty of wilderness for exploring, including Lough Naminn to the NW of Slieve Sneaghta.
