The pretty medieval town of Carlingford lies on the shore of Carlingford Lough, with Slieve Foye rising overhead and the clustered peaks of the Mourne Mountains decorating the opposite shore of the lough. It’s a spectacular setting for a walk, and this trail makes the most of it.

This is one of three walking circuits that begin from Carlingford tourist office; this route is the longest option, and signed by blue arrows. After climbing through the town’s history-filled streets, you emerge onto the hillside above. Here you enter a forest and the ground flattens out. Climb more gently along a forest track, negotiating boggy sections and several gates and stiles along the way.

The trail loops back and reaches a highpoint around 270m above the sea. You are now on the slopes of Slieve Foye mountain, where Fionn Mac Cumhaill is said to have engaged in an epic battle with the ice giant, Ruscaire. The descent brings you back through the heart of Carlingford and back to the tourist office.
