Little is known about Leonardo Da Vinci's mother. Carlo Vecce, eminent expert on Da Vinci, claims that she was a slave from the Caucasus: "His mother was an enslaved Circassian girl from the North Caucasus: the region near the Black Sea, in what is now southern Russia."
He found quite convincing evidence in the state archives of Florence: a deed of manumission in which the wife of a Florentine adventurer who owned slaves from the Black Sea region granted freedom to one Caterina. The notary who drew up the document was Piero da Vinci. It was dated 'November 1452' - when Leonardo was six months old. Piero never drew up another act of release for a Caterina."
