Parmesan cheese originates from Lombardy and is made from the milk of cows from the cascinas, fed with hay from the irrigated meadows. The cheese was primarily produced in the vicinity of Lodi. The name Parmesan was given to the cheese in France at the end of the 18th century. In Paris, the Duchess of Parma (wife of Ferdinand, Duke of Parma and grandson of Louis XV) hosted a meal with cheese from Northern Italy, which the French claimed was from Parma.
