Ponte di Legno (1258 m; 2500 inw.) is located, like Edolo, on the Oglio. It is a modern summer resort and winter sports area at the intersection of the Oglio valley and Valle di Gavia. You will search in vain for old corners in this place. Ponte was almost completely destroyed in World War I and was subsequently rebuilt in a modern style. The municipality includes the villages of Pezzo and Santa Apollonia Terme in the Valle di Gavia, which are situated on a slope among the forests and offer beautiful views of the wide basin in which Ponte lies. The slopes of the basin are only covered with coniferous forests at high altitudes. This is why Ponte is so suitable for winter sports. (See the description of the Gaviapasweg under Bormio).
In summer, Ponte serves as a starting point for excursions through the Adamello and Presanella groups and the southwestern part of the Ortler mountain range. Most mountain hikes in the mentioned massifs require a lot of experience. The terrain is often challenging (steep, much loose debris, glaciers), and the markers are sparse and often faded.
