St Francis of Assisi lived on Isola Maggiore as a hermit from 1211. He must have seen the 12th century Church of Saint Michael the Archangel that was built on the top of the hill. About one entry later, the Franciscan Monastery was built in 1328. That was also the time that the town reached its height.
