The Castello of Larciano is a bit isolated, away from the main roads, yet it is a gem, worth a short trip. It is only a couple of kilometers uphill from the village of San Rocca (a district of Larciano) and you end up in a fascinating little village that breathes an atmosphere of bygone times! The car is necessarily kept out of the narrow alleys!
The highlight is the 40-meter high tower, free to climb up to the "roof terrace" that you reach by opening a sliding door. From there, a beautiful view of the Valdinievole and the Montalbano mountain range.
At the entrance of that tower stands the Marzocco, a sandstone statue of a lion, the symbol of the city of Florence. The nearby restaurant IL MARZOCCO is named after it.
Also take a moment to step inside the Museo Civico (free), at the foot of the Torre. The volunteer from the village will give you a bit of explanation about the historical excavations present here, the skeleton of the Roman in his grave, etc...
