A peculiar event happened here in the neighbourhood of the church of San Clemente. The female pope Johanna gave birth here to a son when she was on her way from the Vatican to the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Doing this, she blew here cover of being a man. Some sources state that she was stoned to death by the public. Other source state that she fled with her son to the port of Ostia where her son became bishop.
