The Passo del Mortirolo is located in Lombardy and connects the mountain valleys of Val Camonica and Valtellina. The climb begins from the S38 (Bormio-Tirano) at the village of Mazzo di Valtellina.
The road is not often used, as it is easier to drive via Aprica. Moreover, traffic of a certain width is not allowed over the pass. A number of bollards at the foot of the climb prevent wider vehicles from passing through.
The road is narrow, and oncoming traffic must use the "pull-off areas" to pass each other.
A few kilometers below the summit, two roads converge on the west side, one coming from Mazzo di Valtellina and the other from Grosio. On the east side, the road splits towards Monno and Vezza d'Oglio.
