The so-called Plätzwiese dam is located at an altitude of 2040 m on the high plateau of Plätzwiese near the Dürrensteinhütte. It is situated exactly on the border of the South Tyrolean municipalities of Toblach and Prags. The purpose of the dam, along with the Landro dam, was to secure the Höhlenstein Valley/Stollatal and thus the access to the Puster Valley, especially since the village and the basin of Cortina d'Ampezzo had been abandoned by the Austrians in May 1915, initially with only Monte Piano preventing the breakthrough. It was part of the system of Austrian fortifications along the border with Italy.
