Fort 1 is a former fort. It was located in Wijnegem and was part of the Brialmont belt. It was built in 1859 and exactly a hundred years later, in 1959, it was dynamited to straighten the Turnhoutse road, which had previously circled around the fort. Since 1993, the southern half of the fort area has been occupied by the Wijnegem Shopping Center. The northern part was repurposed as a forest area.
