Description

The Fonte Gaia is the most famous and most beautiful fountain in Siena. This is saying quite a bit because there are quite a few fountains and water basins spread throughout the city. We even came across one with a rhinoceros on it. The fountain can be found in the middle of the Piazzo del Campo right in front of the Palazzo Pubblico.
On the back and sides of the fountain are richly decorated with beautiful reliefs. These reliefs tell the story of Adem and Eve being expelled from paradise. Nowadays, the fountain from the fifteenth century can no longer be found on the square, but a replica built in the last century. The fountain is fed with water from several aqueducts that are thirty kilometers long in total.
