Nerucci Palace

Palazzo Nerucci is a building located in Castel del Piano, in the province of Grosseto. It houses the art collection of the municipality.
The imposing building dates back to 1564 and was built at the behest of Domenico Nerucci, an important figure of the Vatican courts. Nerucci held important ecclesiastical offices: he was auditor of Cardinal Fornelli, fiscal auditor in the Capitol under Gregory XIII and judge of appeal under Sixtus V. The main façade of the building overlooks Piazza Colonna, inside the historic center, while the back overlooks Corso Nasini: the "C" shaped planimetric development with the courtyard is influenced by Nerucci's Roman contacts, and is inspired by the Farnesina of Baldassarre Peruzzi. In the north-western corner of the building is the loggia della Mercanzia, dating back to 1554, where the chapel of the Conception, exquisitely frescoed, is located. Over the years the building has housed the seat of the Municipality, before it was transferred to the Palazzo Ginanneschi in 1937, and a city high school since 1964. On the main floor of the building is set up in 2005 the art collection of Palazzo Nerucci.
