Description

The Cave of the Sibyl is an artificial Greco-Roman gallery, discovered as a result of the archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Cumae. The cave is identified as the place where the Sibyl of Cumae operated and disseminated her oracles.

The date of construction is somewhat uncertain: according to Amedeo Maiuri, it was built between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, as evidenced by the trapezoidal cut of the tuff stone, while others indicate the period of its construction as being between the 10th and 4th centuries BC; according to tradition, this was the place where the Sibyl of Cumae resided, famous for her oracles and mentioned in the Aeneid by Publius Vergilius Maro, who describes a place like the cave.[1] In fact, near the entrance, there are two marble plaques bearing this inscription; other scholars have hypothesized that it was a military structure with a defensive character for the city and the nearby port.
