The castle was built on the northern slope of Mount S. Angelo in 890 right after the Saracen incursions in Umbria in a dominant and naturally impregnable position. It defended, along with the fortress of Ferentillo, the important abbey of San Pietro in Valle. Throughout its millennia-long history, it had various changes of ownership and essentially followed the fortunes of Ferentillo, which, after being restored to the status of a municipality, repurchased it in 1860. Lacking road connections with Valnerina and economic attractions, it underwent, in the post-World War II period, a progressive depopulation, common to all the smaller Umbrian centers, and since 1950 it has been completely abandoned.
