Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno is an enormous 19th-century hilltop cemetery on the outskirts of the city, often described as an open-air museum of marble sculpture . The cemetery opened in 1851, covers over 30 hectares, and is considered one of the largest and most impressive monumental cemeteries in Europe. Throughout, you find highly realistic statues of grieving angels, widows, children, and entire family mausoleums with extremely refined details (lace, hair, tears). The architectural heart is a neoclassical Pantheon with arcades and colonnades, inspired by both classical camposantos and romantic park cemeteries.
There are separate sections for English, Protestant, and Jewish graves; for instance , Constance Lloyd, the wife of Oscar Wilde , is buried here, as well as famous Italian figures.
Staglieno is situated on a hill east of the center (Piazzale Resasco) and is easily accessible by bus lines 13, 14, and 34.
