Poggio Di Sanremo is mainly known as a climb in the cycling classic Milan-San Remo. The Poggio is usually the last climb in the race and is particularly challenging because the riders have almost 300 km in their legs. The climb itself is not that steep, with an average gradient of 3.7%. Riders often try to make a difference on this climb to avoid a mass sprint. In recent years, there have been two successful breakaways from the Poggio: Fabian Cancellara in 2008 and a group of Vincenzo Nibali, Fabian Cancellara, and Simon Gerrans in 2012, with the latter winning the sprint.
