cathedral san remo

The Cathedral of San Siro (Insigne collegiate Basilica Cathedral of San Siro) is the oldest religious building and one of the leading examples of architecture romanicanel western Liguria. Located in the historical centre, in the square, was built in the 12th century.

The first Christian Church dates to 881 according to tradition in the place where the Bishop Siro, later Saint, would usually celebrated mass. In the same place would, for a time, found burial San Romolo di Genova. But the Church as it is known today was built by masters of Como at the beginning of the 12th century in Romanesque style, Gothic, and the earliest records attesting the existence are acts of 1147 drafted by City Council. Within it on 6 June 1297 in a ceremony the Archbishop of Genoa City rights Jacopo da Varagine ceded to the Doria and De Mari which lasted until 1319. In 1530, the Church was awarded the title of "Distinguished collegiate". In 1544 the Turkish Corsair Khayr al-Din Barbarossa, arrived in the waters off the port of Sanremo, landed to pick up supplies, some privateers did not accept this went in the Collegiate Church of san Siro to perform RAID but not finding anything (all valuables were hidden within the walls) destroyed the Church altar. Starting from 1619 started all a series of changes that affected mainly the Romanesque apses and the priest and that transformed the primitive Romanesque structure in Baroque style in 1668. The Church suffered severe damage on 30 September 1745 following a bombing carried out by a British naval formation commanded by Admiral Rowley, which caused the collapse of part of the roof and façade. In 1753 the Bell of san Siro, affectionately nicknamed by sanremesi "Bacì", he mustered the citizens of Sanremo starting the revolt against the rule of the Republic of Genoa, meanwhile took to the Doria family. Suppressed the revolt of the city, the Commander Augustine Pinelli for punishment demolished the bell tower which was rebuilt in the Baroque style while the Bell was moved to Genoa as spoils of war and placed in the Ducal Palace of Genoa. In 1901 began massive restoration of the Romanesque appearance by demolishing all Baroque overlays both within the Church and outside, after a long interruption works were officially closed in 1948. In 1947 the church became a minor basilica and finally the Cathedral in 1975.
