The Merano museum is the oldest in South Tyrol. In 1899 the "Meraner Museumsverein" was founded, and the following year a first, small museum was opened at the Glallhäusl on the Winter Promenade. The first director was the physician Franz Innerhofer, who used most of his art collection for the museum.
