The mausoleum of Archduke John, dating back to the second half of the nineteenth century, is located in Scena, not far from Merano.
The mausoleum was built by Franz, Count of Merano, in honour of his father, Archduke John of Habsburg-Lorraine to house the remains of his entire family. His father, in fact, and his heirs, could have been buried by right in the Kapuzinergruft in Vienna together with the other members and ancestors of the imperial family, but with the marriage between John and his beloved Anna Plochl, a bourgeois, he lost all rights with respect to the Austrian imperial family, including those of succession and the right to be buried in the imperial crypt.
