Victor Emanuel II (Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso; March 14, 1820 - January 9, 1878) was King of Sardinia from 1849, and on March 17, 1861, he was crowned King of Italy, the first king of the united Italy, a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italians nicknamed him Father of the Fatherland (Italian: 'Padre della Patria').
He aimed for a united Italy, but Austria - which played a leading role in Northern Italy - opposed this. Yet he succeeded with the help of the French.
