San Gimignano is especially famous for the medieval towers that mark the panorama of the city. The Torre Grossa is the tallest tower in San Gimignano (hence the name) and is located in Piazza del Duomo, next to the Nuovo Palazzo del Podestà.
To the left of the tower is the Duomo or Collegiata. Inside, all the walls are frescoed, with impressive sequences by Lippo Memmi and Bartolo di Fredi depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. You can also admire frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, Taddeo di Bartolo and Ghirlandaio.
The Palazzo del Popolo with its elegant arched windows houses the Museo Civico, with works by Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo Memmi, Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi, Il Sodoma and Pinturicchio. The frescoes by Memmo di Filippuccio that decorate the rooms of the podestà in the Palazzo del Popolo illustrate everyday life of the early 14th century. Remarkable profane painting.
