The baluardos around the city of Lucca usually lead directly through the thick wall to the city, but below Baluardo S. Martino you can walk through the barracks where the soldiers are said to have gathered. Once through the narrow tunnel, large cavernous spaces open up where the soldiers would have taken shelter. There are several vents and old fireplaces. Perhaps the men had to spend a lot of time here. It's dark, dingy and damp. It will no doubt have been lit with lamps and fires.
