Piazza Napoleon is a large square in the historic center of Luccan. The Piazza Napoleon, also known as Piazaa Grande, was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. A medieval fortress used to be found on the site of the square. The square was commissioned by Napoleon's sister. Originally, a large statue of Napoleon was planned in the square, but it never materialized. There is, however, a statue of Maria Luisa van Bourban. At the same time as the square, the Palazzo Ducale was built on the square.
Today, Piazza Napoleon is a car-free square where markets and events are regularly held. The Lucca Summer Festival is held every year in Piazza Napoleon.
