On the territory of S. Concordio, since 1232, the Spedale di S. Lazzaro, located on the ancient Roman road to Pisa, stood in a place known as "Coda di Prato", denoting the extreme spur of the great "Prato del Marchese". This Spedale, with its attached church, functioned until the end of the great plague in 1632, and was later united with the Ospedale della Misericordia, known as Ospedale di S. Luca. At a site close to the city walls, which may have contained a simple oratory, a new church was built in the late 1700s, dedicated to Saint Concordius, which later became a parish church in 1779. The current church, on the site of the previous one, was built between 1830 and 1850; the bell tower dates from 1929.
