Description

The Augustinians began construction of the church and adjacent monastery in 1258, which lasted more than fifty years and was expanded and rebuilt over the centuries, especially in the 15th century, between 1450 and 1490. In November 1492, Count Baldo destined di Mariotto Lucarini, patrician of Siena, in a codicil of his testamentary dispositions 50 florins for the expenses related to the execution of the high altarpiece.

After a disastrous fire in 1747, a complete renovation was required, supervised by Luigi Vanvitelli, from July 17, 1747 to 1755. In 1785, the neighboring parish of San Salvatore joined the church, which was then given the title of parish church. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the Napoleonic abolition of the religious orders, the Augustinians had to leave the monastery, which was entrusted to the boarding school of Tolomei. The Augustinians returned a few years later to run the parish, but unable to re-occupy the monastery, they had to settle in a small house. At the end of the 20th century they left the building for good and the church was entrusted to the Diocese of Siena.
