The monastery was founded in 1354 by Francesco di Pietro Porcari for use by the Jesuits. It was expanded in the following century, thanks in part to the contributions of the municipality of Siena.
There are many works of art in the church, cloister and cloister. To the left of the entrance is the tabernacle with a large fragmentary fresco of the Pieta and Saints by Guidoccio Cozzarelli.
In the church, the most important work is the complex with a fresco of the Madonna and Child, Angels and Saints by the Gesuato and Garlandesque painter Fra' Giuliano da Firenze (second half of the 15th century), a marble frame by Lorenzo di Mariano, known as Marrina (second half of the 15th century), and two frescoes on the sides by Rutilio Manetti depicting the Angel Announcing and the Madonna Heralded (first half of the 17th century).
Also worth mentioning are the tomb plaque of Bishop Antonio Bertini by Urbano da Cortona (1486), the Saint Anna Metterza painted ex voto by Onoria Orsini to Giovanni di Lorenzo in 1530, and a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Catherine of Siena. , attributed to Giacomo Cozzarelli and given to the Sienese who visited Rome in the Holy Year of 1600 by their fellow citizens living in the capital.
The chapel to the left of the presbytery has a Coronation of the Virgin by Sano di Pietro and the Ecstasy of Jerome by Domenico Manetti.
In the former cloister is a panel painting by Bernardino Fungai depicting the Assumption of the Virgin between frescoes by Fra' Giuliano da Firenze, both from the second half of the 15th century, and the Stories of Blessed Giovanni Colombini by Fra' Benedetto da Brescia and Fra' Banedetto da Lucca (1575).
In the cloister are other paintings by Bartolomeo della Porta, Francesco Vanni and Alessandro Casolani, and a 14th century cross painted by an unknown follower of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
