Built by the Florentines in the 16th century, the bastion has a circular plan and is part of the city walls. It is located at the southern end (the end facing the then enemy Siena) near Porta San Giovanni.
The bastion's name comes from the lost Monastery of Saint Francis, which was built in the 13th century on the site outside the walls now occupied by Piazzale dei Martiri di Montemaggio.
On the bastion is a plaque commemorating Niccolò Machiavelli, who instructed the city's militia here in 1507.
