SAIL OF TOMATO
In the heart of Sestri Levante, at the center of Piazza Francesco Bo, since 2002 one of the last works by Giò Pomodoro is located, titled 'Sail for Christopher Columbus' on which is engraved the verse by Mario Luzi "What journey have the winds given you...".
The "sail" of the artist from Pesaro is a contemporary work of art and constitutes a true symbol, becoming an iconic image for the city that has managed to transform a work of art into a major tourist attraction. The bronze sculpture with a marble base depicts a sail filling with the wind, representing the strength and freedom of nature. It was created in a foundry in Pietrasanta, weighs two and a half tons, and stands six meters tall. At the inauguration ceremony, the son of the late artist, who unveiled the large sail, the mayor, fishermen, sailors, and numerous civil and military authorities were present.
For all the elderly sailors, it was a moment of remembrance, highlighted also by the round table held at the Abbey of the Annuziata in Portobello, where art critics and historians participated, recounting sailing navigation and the maritime history of the ancient Ligurian village.
