The "Tonnara di Scopello" is a historic tuna fishing complex . A "tonnara" is a traditional tuna fishery, an important part of Sicilian maritime history.
The Tonnara di Scopello dates back to the 13th century and originally served as a place where tuna was caught, processed and preserved. The complex consists of several buildings, including the tuna fishing houses, the tuna net storage, the tuna pressing mill and the characteristic tuna fishing ladder (a structure where tuna was caught). The complex enjoys a beautiful location overlooking the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Although tuna fishing in the Tonnara di Scopello is no longer active, the complex has retained its historic charm and attracts many visitors. Today the Tonnara di Scopello is used as a tourist attraction and the beach is popular.
