Description

Although according to historiographical tradition the church was built between 1224 and 1226 by Blessed Angelo Tancredi da Rieti, companion of Saint Francis , the document of acquisition of the church by the Sicilian Province, signed by Pope Clement VI, dates from 1348.

It underwent renovation between 1379 and 1380.

From the 16th century, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi gave its name to one of the oldest neighborhoods of Alcamo, together with the other three neighborhoods San Giacomo de Spada, San Calogero and Maggiore Chiesa.

The church underwent a second renovation between 1608 and 1648 , a period during which it was first demolished and then rebuilt. The monastery attached to the church was also rebuilt during this period. It was then enlarged and embellished in 1716.

The founding of the Congregation of the Precious Blood of Christ in the church dates back to 1916, followed by the Congregation of the Madonna della Salute (1944).

After the 1968 Belice earthquake, restoration work began to repair the damage to the church and monastery, which lasted from 1975 to 1976.

The interior of the church has a barrel-vaulted nave and a side chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and eight altars . The bell tower attached to the church and the portal are the parts that have remained unchanged from the original project.
The buildings adjacent to the church are the Franciscan Monastery and the Oratory of the "Society of the Immaculate".

Two statues from 1520 by Antonello Gagini have been preserved: San Marco - Maria Maddalena.
