The Church of the Madonna della Catena was originally built at a distance of about a thousand steps from the eastern walls of the city. Although the exact date of construction is not known, it is known from documents that it existed as early as 1545.
Due to the distance of this church from the city and the difficult journey, especially in the winter months, the members of this congregation decided to rebuild the church at their own expense in a location closer to the city. For this purpose they purchased in 1661 from the Monastery of Santa Chiara and under their protection they founded the new church of Santa Maria della Catena.
Inside the church there is a painting from 1799 by the Alcamo painter Giuseppe Renda, depicting the Madonna della Catena
