The Church of San Pietro Apostolo is one of the oldest churches in Alcamo , as evidenced by a document from 1367 . It was added to a women's orphanage in 1631 and rebuilt in the years 1645-1649.
Noteworthy for its artistic beauty is the main portal from 1649. These five altars were located in the church, which had one nave.
The roof, which collapsed due to the 1968 earthquake but was later rebuilt. Unfortunately, the remaining decorations have been damaged by years of exposure to the elements. The interior of the building is not completely intact. The old majolica floors and the tombstone of the priest Vincenzo Graffeo are still in good condition.
It is very likely that the nuns , in addition to their charity work, had been involved in the education of girls since 1631. Today, activities related to the hospitality and education of minors with disadvantaged economic circumstances continue.
