This is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city of Marsala, Trapani and certainly of Sicily, thanks to a skillful structural and mechanical conservative restoration, the mill of Saline Ettore and Infersa is still functioning.
In the months of July, August and September, it is put into use twice a week , so you can admire it in the evocative landscape of the salt pans: a true historical and architectural beauty of industrial level .
The six blades are covered with white sails, allowing them to 'catch' the force of the wind. The turning activates an ancient mechanism that rotates the stone millstones in the mill body at a frequency of more than 100 rpm . The gears that set the millstones in motion are made entirely of wood by Paolo Stampa, Mastru Liddu, one of the last shipbuilders of Trapani. Thanks to his knowledge and experience in working with wood, he succeeded in designing and, above all, putting into operation the complex wooden mechanism of the Mill. Today, the Ettore and Infersa Saline Mill represents a true masterpiece of industrial archeology from the 16th century.
