Chiesa Parrocchiale di S. Maria la Nova - Palermo

Built in 1339 with a small hospital with oratory attached, commissioned by the noble and wealthy De Cesario-Pagano family to help pilgrims who were sick. In 1522 it was completely rebuilt. The name Santa Maria La Nova is derived from the old cult building that was also named after Maria, on whose remains the "new" temple was built . The work was not completed until 1582.

The church was the seat of a group of confreres who, moved by a spirit of compassion, founded the 'Deputation for the Redemption of the Wicked' with the charitable aim of liberating Christian prisoners from the Turks by giving the Turks, as ransom, the to offer significant sums resulting from alms and donations from believers who were sensitive to the fate of their brothers and sisters.

The facade is characterized by the presence of an interesting loggia with three arches. On the frame of the entablature of the main portal is a stucco medallion with the eight-pointed star, a Marian symbol.

Inside, the basilica-like body of the naves, with central arches on elegant capitals, can be distinguished from the airy body of the tribune.

In the main naves the rich and elegant Rococo stucco decoration is still preserved; the design of the two choir stalls in the side aisles is particularly beautiful.
