The gate was built in the 14th century, but was later destroyed and rebuilt in 1553 .
The gate is named after the Kalsa district in the late Middle Ages, which was inhabited by a population of Greek descent.
In the 18th century, with the demolition of two bastions, the gate was moved more towards the sea according to the new contour of the wall and above it the Palazzo Forcella De Seta was built around 1840.
The decoration follows the stylistic repertoire of Mannerism and is characterized by the presence of streamers, capitals with masks, bizarre ashlar stones and human statuettes placed on the architrave.
