The Archbishop's Palace was built in the 15th century .
This Gothic-Catalan style palace was built on the initiative of Archbishop Simone di Bologna , belonging to the aristocratic Beccadelli family of Bologna, whose coat of arms can still be seen above the palace portal . The palace is connected to the old bell tower of the cathedral, which from then on became part of the palace. The high tower of the palace originally belonged to the cathedral . It was renovated in the 19th century . At that time, the old pyramidal roof was replaced by a neo-Gothic style tower that reproduces the appearance of the cathedral's four towers.
Today the palace is home to the Diocesan Museum of Palermo.
As you descend Via Vittorio Emanuele from Porta Nuova , you will see the facade of the new wing of the palace, which was added to the complex in the 16th century. Inside is the Sicilian Theological University , an institution that took the place of the Arcivescovile Seminary. Here is a beautiful courtyard.
