The church was built between 1625 and 1628 .
The facade is dominated by the noble coat of arms of the Moncada family . Initially it was intended as a chapel of the monastery, built in 1627, which from 1633 housed the lady Juana De la Cerda, wife of the Duke of Montalto, Antonio Aragona Moncada.
The interior, in Baroque style, is rich in frescoes and stuccowork . The frescoes in the presbytery are special, including the group depicting 'Angels and the Eternal Father' by Giacomo Serpotta. In addition to Giacomo Serpotta, his brother Giuseppe and son Procopio worked on the decoration of the church.
The paintings of the vault and walls are attributed by some scholars to Antonio Grano, although others prefer to attribute the work to Filippo Tancredi. The frescoes in the sub-pulpit were painted by Guglielmo Borrema
