The monument depicts President Ruggero Settimo , after whom the square is named.
He was the political leader of the Sicilian Revolution of 1848. Ruggero Settimo was elected President of the Government of the reconstituted Kingdom of Sicily by the Sicilian Parliament during the Revolution of 1848 and was already considered during his lifetime as the "Father of Sicilian native country".
Two years after his death, on January 12, 1865 , on the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution, the monument dedicated to him was inaugurated.
