A quadriga is a chariot pulled by four horses. In ancient times, such chariots were often associated with triumph and victory.
The quadriga at the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi has often been interpreted as a symbol of cultural and artistic triumph , as it sits atop a theater. It emphasizes the greatness of the arts. It is an example of how sculpture and statuary are often used to enhance the meaning and character of buildings.
It fits perfectly with the original idea to build a large open-air amphitheater and the semi-circular facade with its Doric and Ionic Greco-Roman style colonnades.
