The arrival of the Teatro Politeama in 1865, which today is the prestigious seat of the Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana , made this place such an important landmark for the city of Palermo , both in terms of location and prominence, that even the two large squares Piazza Ruggero Settimo and Piazza Castelnuovo are commonly called Piazza Politeama.
The square represents one of the most popular city squares. Couples, friends and especially skaters of all origins meet in front of the famous theater.
In 1875, the powerful Florio family, who had their villa in Piazza Castelnuovo, built the Palchetto della musica , intended to receive music bands for parties, fairs and events. However, the real purpose of the construction was to prevent Piazza Castelnuovo from being used for housing.
